90 Houston-area companies make 2021 Inc. 5000 list - Houston Business Journal (2024)

At least 90 companies on this year's Inc. 5000 list are based in the greater Houston area — and more than 40 of them are repeat honorees.

Inc. ranks companies on the list by revenue growth from 2017 to 2020.

Only one of the local companies cracked the top 100: Homestead Brands, a family-owned e-commerce firm in Humble that sells various brands of multifunctional furniture. The company, owned and founded by brothers Brenden and Kyle Marquardt, took the No. 98 spot with 3,916% revenue growth over three years. The company was founded in 2008, according to Inc.

Brenden Marquardt leads Homestead Brands' supply chain, customer experience and finance, according to the website. Before forming Homestead, he worked as an investment analyst at Merrill Lynch and Rice University's $6 billion endowment fund. He also worked as a business development manager for Kinder Morgan. Kyle Marquardt leads the company's marketing and corporate strategy. Before launching Homestead, Kyle worked as a consultant at management firm Bain & Co., led the North America business strategic planning for W. W. Grainger (NYSE: GWW) and served as the head of transformation design and strategy at Spanish airline Vueling Airlines in Barcelona.

"Our success has been a slow and steady journey over the last several years: in 2018 we doubled, in 2019 we quadrupled, and in 2020 we quintupled," Kyle Marquardt told the Houston Business Journal. "We were on a great growth trajectory prior to the pandemic, but the lockdowns created more awareness and demand for our product (Murphy beds) as people looked for ways to make their indoor spaces more functional. While we had that tailwind in 2020, the pandemic in 2021 has created serious shortages of the type of wood we use to make our beds, which has led to limited supply and cost increases for us. Even with that consideration, we’re on track to double or triple again in 2021."

Overall, the median revenue growth of the 90 Houston-area companies on the 2021 Inc. 5000 was 191% — up 41 percentage points from last year's 150%. The previous year's list had 110 Houston-area companies.

The median revenue growth for all 5,000 companies on the list was 167%. The Houston companies' combined revenue for 2020 totals $7.3 billion, about 2.9% of the total for all 5,000 companies.
