Thousands of people are now able to receive hospital level care while at home through the world leading virtual wards initiative. That’s people like Richard, who was one of the first to receive virtual care from Bolton NHS Foundation Trust, after experiencing a heart condition earlier this year.‘When I was ready to be discharged the hospital needed to continue to monitor how I was getting on.’After expressing he was happy to be part of the virtual wards programme, Richard went home to continue his care, where he could spend time recovering alongside his wife, Hazel.‘I was handed a band to wear on my arm and the monitoring took care of everything. It was just like wearing a watch. Occasionally I would need blood tests so a couple of nurses would still visit me to make sure I was alright.You’ve got your home life available to you, you’re fully mobile and you can live your life as normal. If you’re eligible to take part, I would say go for it. It’s ideal, it gets you home where you are happier, and more relaxed and settled.’The virtual wards programme shows a reduction in recovery times for patients and eases pressure on hospital beds. Texas Nursing Homes and Trade Groups File Suit Against CMS Over Staffing MandateTwo nursing home trade groups and three Texas-based nursing home providers recently filed suit against the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), asking a federal court to overturn CMS’s nursing home staffing mandate. The suit was brought in the U.S. District Court of Texas for the Northern District of Texas, and was brought by the American Health Care Association and the Texas Health Care Association, as well as three nursing home operators. The suit alleges that CMS and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) do not have the authority to require nursing homes to meet the staffing ratios and other requirements, and that the agencies, therefore, violated the Administrative Procedure Act.Under the new requirements released in April, all nursing homes that receive federal funding through the Medicare and Medicaid programs will be required to have a registered nurse on staff 24 hours per day, seven days per week and provide at least 3.48 hours of nursing care per resident per day. With NHS waiting lists at an all time high and staff goodwill at an all time low, it’s clear that any solution to reduce waiting times shouldn’t ask anything more of NHS staff. NHS waiting lists in England now stand at record levels according to new figures; there were 7.47mn patients waiting to start routine hospital treatment at the end of May, up from 7.42mn the month before. The waiting list includes 416,000 children who are waiting to start treatment – a figure that’s up 9.7 per cent in just one month. And the list includes 21,282 patients who have been waiting for more than a year.We can see that NHS staff are at breaking point, burnt out; their goodwill’s been severely depleted post Covid. We provide weekly and monthly reports to clinical departments, showing the impact that we’re having on waiting lists. The reports give transparency too, showing the potential level of additional work done - and patients seen - by clinicians and NHS staff. People in the Black Country are being urged to think carefully about which health service they should use during the upcoming industrial action.Junior doctors are planning to strike for five consecutive days, starting from 7am on Thursday 27 June to 7am on Tuesday 2 July.All health and care partners in the Black Country are working together to prepare for the industrial action, which will have significant impact on NHS local services, and are asking the public for their support.Emergency care will be prioritised, and people are being reminded that 999 and emergency departments are still the right services if it is a life-saving emergency. However, for anything that isn’t life-threatening, people are being urged to use 111 online as the first port of call for health needs. People can also call 111 for help, advice, and signposting to the most appropriate service.Pharmacies, GP appointments, walk-in centres, minor injury units and urgent treatment centres will continue to be available during the industrial action and can help people with a range of injuries and illnesses.People with hospital appointments should continue to come forward for the care they need and do not need to call to check if appointments are going ahead. If appointments do need to be rearranged due to strike action, patients will be contacted directly.Dr Ananta Dave, Chief Medical Officer for the NHS Black Country Integrated Care Board, said: “The NHS continues to face high demand and staff are working hard to provide patients with the best possible care during what is already a busy period of the summer in the NHS. “During the upcoming industrial action, our priority is to continue to provide safe care for those who need it, however, it’s vital that people choose services wisely so that care is available to patients who need it most.“If you need medical help or advice, you should contact NHS 111 online in the first instance, and they will direct you to the most appropriate service for advice or treatment.“This could include your local pharmacy, GP or a local NHS walk-in centre. Calling 999 and A&E departments should only be used if it is a life-threatening emergency.”GP practices will continue to be open as normal during the industrial action. Please continue to attend your GP and dental appointments unless you are contacted and told otherwise.Dr Jonathan Odum, Group Chief Medical Officer for The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust and Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust, said: “Ahead of this week’s strike action, we are asking patients to use their NHS services wisely and remember ED departments and 999 are for life-threatening emergencies only. “We’re thankful to our communities for working with us to try to ensure care is available to those patients who need it most. I've often posted posts critical of the NHS, and after having been through the ordeal of the last few days, I feel the need to clarify some things. The NHS is broken but we need to be clear on what parts we're bashing when we do so.I think high level it is a disaster. That's because those at the top are greedy, dishonest, and don't care less about us. At hospital level, it was very disjointed. One department didn't seem to know what the others had done, and if it wasn't for that blue folder thingy, no doctor would know what was going on. While I was there I saw many an issue that could be resolved, and there were many frustrating delays, which needn't have happened (although I don't know all the facts behind the delays). I will say that once I was through the 111/GP process and actually in the hospital's care, it was WAY more efficient, although still not nearly as efficient as it could be.So, the NHS as a unit, is broken and needs urgent attention. However, we now get onto the good bits.The people. The NHS staff (at least at Peterborough City Hospital) were exceptional. Absolutely brilliant. Everyone I dealt with was at very least professional, courteous, and friendly. Most of them went over and beyond. The nursing staff.. Just wow. Those people have so many things to put up with, and they are some of the most friendly and caring people in the world. I saw them dealing so patiently with people that I was ready to throw out of the ward. All the staff were navigating an ineffective system, to provide the best care they could, and I for one am extremely appreciative for them.So, when I speak of a broken NHS, I mean the system. The people are far from broken. The people are superstars, and they deserve to be celebrated, and not 'dragged down' with a broken system.The fact that I went from consulting a GP, to being discharged after surgery in 4 days, is a testimony to how great the NHS staff were. And to do that in a broken, disjointed, system, is even more impressive.#NHS #Hospital #NHSStaff #System

Creating #900 additional hospitalbeds is clearly a positive step given current #NHS pressures, but what’s most important is looking after patients in their *own beds* rather than them needing to go to hospital in the first place.
